CHAPTER TWO: The Robber
My eyes take their time adjusting to the smoky, dim-lit front room of the Robber. The music is loud, the bass prominent. The whole place bounces.
I squeeze my way between sweaty bodies and unruly drunks to the back of the wearhouse-style dance room, where my friends have already claimed a spot. It’s one of those waist-high tables that usually has a group of people leaning their elbows on it. Frost sits on the only bar stool. Joe and Riley stand next to him—Riley, wedged in Joe’s armpit, looking miserable as usual. Her dark hair hangs straight down, covering her face from me. A couple of other guys are deep in conversation about whatever game is on the television over the bar. I wedge between two of them and put my elbows on the table.

CHAPTER ONE. La Cabra
I will forever remember the day I meet Maura Isles as the day I pass out in the middle of the university’s rec field. The two events aren’t related, but I’m certain that fate or God or whatever is playing some kind of joke on me by testing my limits on that hot September day. Hey, let’s humiliate Jane to death in front of all her friends, and then let’s introduce her to the woman of her dreams.
I don’t see her when she first walks into the Student Health Center; I’m busy fanning myself with a SMART EATING brochure and pretending I’m much too cool to be there. I make a mental list of all the places I would rather be: the front row of Schnieder’s history class, tied upside down over boiling hot water, scrubbing a toilet with a toothbrush and both my brothers on my shoulders… anywhere but sitting with my best guy friend waiting to see a nurse because I passed out in the middle of a soccer game. I have never felt more like the weaker sex than I do today—and that is a feeling I have spent my entire life trying to avoid.
